Acne Scar Treatment - For Spotless Smooth Skin

An acne scar treatment is necessary following an acne treatment course so that the acne scars no longer pose any threat to your overall appearance

Acne scarring causes as much of irritation as the acne condition causes pain. These days, however, there are effective remedies to remove acne scars - dermal filler, punch excision, punch elevation, subcutaneous incision and laser resurfacing.

Usually, one or more methods are combined to treat the scars and produce the spotless effect. Acne scar treatment depends on the type of scarring - segregated into type's ice pick, rolling and boxcar based on the appearance of the scar. Treatment plans are developed after properly analyzing an acne scar.

Acne Scars - Treatment Plans

Ice pick scars being narrow yet sharp; treating these scars is a bit of a problem. These scars extend to the subcutaneous layer and are usually corrected surgically using methods like punch excision and punch elevation.

The former involves excising the scar with a punch biopsy tool. Later on, the loose skin edges are sutured together. In some cases, however, the excision is followed by punch skin grafting.

Rolling Scars give the skin an undulating appearance and can be corrected by using the subcutaneous incision (or subcision) technique that involves breaking up the subcutaneous fibrous bands with the help of a specially beveled needle.

The advancement of the needle between the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue cuts the tethering bands. Subcision is performed under local anesthesia.

Boxcar Scars are round to oval depressions with sharp vertical edges. Treating shallow boxcar scars with conventional skin resurfacing techniques can set them right; however, deep boxcar scars require full-thickness treatment techniques like punch excision (with or without skin grafting).

Another method employed to treat deep boxcar scars is the Punch elevation technique. The treatment involves elevating the punch excised base to the surface of the skin and attached with sutures.

1. Some other popular and safe scar treatment techniques are:
2. Dermal fillers
3. Laser resurfacing

The former treatment involves injecting dermal fillers like fat, bovine collagen, human collagen, hyaluronic acid derivatives and polytheyl-methacrylate microspheres with collagen into acne scars.

This raises the surface of the skin and gives it a smoother look. Laser resurfacing involves burning the epidermal layers of skin to a particular depth. Thereafter, the skin heals following the natural regeneration process.
